Strong economic recovery in Slovenia in 2021

According to estimates by the Ministry of Finance, general government debt in Slovenia decreased by almost 5 percentage points in 2021 compared to 2020. In 2020, general government debt amounted to 79.8% of gross domestic product, and in 2021, according to estimates by the Ministry of Finance, it decreased to 74.9% of gross domestic product.

In 2021, gross domestic product in Slovenia increased in real terms by 8.1%. Gross domestic product in Slovenia increased in the fourth quarter by 10.5% compared to the same period in 2020. In the fourth quarter of 2021, consumption in Slovenia increased by 22.9% compared to the same period in 2020. Investments increased by 11%.

The available Eurostat data shows that growth in Slovenia was stronger than in the European Union and the eurozone on average. In the European Union, gross domestic product increased on average by 4.8% in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year, and in the eurozone by 4.6%.

Employment also increased in Slovenia by 1.4%, in particular in manufacturing, construction, healthcare, social affairs and administration. At the end of December 2021, the unemployment rate in Slovenia was 4.6%, which is 0.7 percentage points lower than at the end of 2020. The unemployment rate in Slovenia is significantly lower than in the European Union (6.4%) and the eurozone (7%) on average.
