EU funding for a new park and ride in Kranj

  • Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy
Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy has approved EU funding for a new park and ride in Kranj. EU funding invested in park and ride schemes has so far resulted in altogether 1,614 parking spaces across Slovenia, of which 56 will be provided in the newly constructed Kranj park and ride facility by September this year.

The park and ride project, which will receive ERDF support under the Integrated Territorial Investment mechanism will be managed by Urban Municipality of Kranj. The goal of the project is to provide the city of Kranj with a park and ride facility of type B in the district called Zlato Polje. The park and ride with public transport connections will allow Kranj residents, commuters or visitors to leave their vehicles and transfer to a bus or rent a bike to get to the city centre. The facility will include service structures, 56 parking spaces, of which three will be designated for disabled drivers, six for electric vehicles with adjacent charging stations, and five for motorcycles. The eastern section of the park and ride parking lot will feature a designated bike parking area for 20 bikes of the local KRsKOLESOM bike rental/sharing scheme. This part will be connected to the bikeways and sidewalks along the Koroška cesta street. The planned park and ride facility in Zlato Polje will allow its users to leave their vehicle in the parking lot and continue their journey either by switching to the bus, i.e. public transport, or continuing their journey to the city centre by bike (bike sharing scheme). The park and ride will help the municipality reduce traffic volume in the city centre, divert commuters from their cars in densely populated urban areas, and provide additional parking spaces.

Urban Municipality of Kranj has already carried out a procurement procedure to select the contractor. Construction work is scheduled for completion in the end of September this year.

Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy has already approved park and ride projects that have received EUR 7.2 million from the Cohesion Fund and the European Regional Development Fund in the period 2014-2020. Under the Integrated Territorial Investments mechanism, support has been given to the abovementioned park and ride in Kranj, the park and ride facility in Koper and to the park and ride hub in Celje. Additionally, EUR 4 million have been allocated under the call for proposals for park and ride systems to systems in Ljubljana-Stanežiče, Krško, Grosuplje, Kamnik, Sevnica, Šentjur and Borovnica. Altogether 1,614 park and ride parking spaces are now available to Slovenians thanks to the EU funds.
