Joint statement on the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Slovenia and Portugal

  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs
In February 2022, Slovenia and Portugal celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Portugal recognised the independence of Slovenia on 15 January 1992, and diplomatic relations were established on 3 February 1992.

During the last 30 years, our two countries have maintained fruitful and ever-closer bilateral relations, both at the bilateral level and as members of the European Union.

Portugal and Slovenia share several interests in very diverse areas, such as culture, economy and defence, as well as in the Mediterranean. They cultivate excellent political relations as evidenced by the high-level visits that took place in the last few years, such as the official visit of the Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Portugal in 2020, and the official visits of the President of Portugal, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal and the Minister of National Defence of Portugal to Slovenia, all in 2021. We look forward to the upcoming official visit of the President of Slovenia to Portugal.

In 2021, our two countries maintained close and constructive cooperation in the framework of the second joint Presidency Trio of the Council of the EU, and successfully concluded their respective Presidencies of the Council of the EU.

On this date, Slovenia and Portugal reaffirm their commitment to strengthen their bilateral relations further at the political, economic and cultural levels, and to reinforce their cooperation, which is already strong and productive, within the EU, NATO, United Nations and other international multilateral organizations.
