The Agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community entered into force on 1 February 2020. As of the date of the UK’s withdrawal, it became a ‘third country’ (non-EU member state). Consequently, UK citizens are no longer subject to the same conditions of residence in EU countries as before the withdrawal.

The Withdrawal Agreement provided for a certain transitional period for UK citizens residing in the EU to obtain a residence permit. The deadline for regularising status in the Republic of Slovenia is 31 December 2021.
