Meeting of Minister Dr Logar with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Anže Logar met with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić in Strasbourg. He presented priorities of Slovenia's presidency of the Council of the EU – topics that are also at the heart of Council of Europe's activities. During the meeting, they discussed accession of EU to the European Convention of Human Rights that was envisaged in the Lisbon treaty. They also reviewed other current political and strategic directions of the Council of Europe, the oldest pan-European international organization especially in the light of Covid-19. At the same time, the meeting was excellent opportunity to assess cooperation between Council of Europe and Slovenia.

Minister Dr Logar reiterated Slovenia's commitment to effective multilateralism and enhanced international cooperation in the spirit of solidarity at all levels. He emphasized the importance of the Council of Europe as a guarantor protecting human rights, fundamental freedoms and rule of law. Further on, he also touched upon challenging topics that are high on the agenda of the Council of Europe such as consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic including socio-economic consequences, protecting vulnerable groups and inclusive societies including minorities, the right to healthy environment and development of a legal framework for the use of artificial intelligence.

He expressed satisfaction with highly diversified cooperation between the Council of Europe and Slovenia. Minister emphasized Slovenian support for work of the European Court of Human Rights and enforcement of its judgments as well as all the efforts made by the Council of Europe for the protection of vulnerable groups, in addition to artificial intelligence and digital transformation. All of those represent priorities of cooperation between Council of Europe and Slovenia.
