Minister Logar hosts Portuguese Foreign Minister in the run-up to the Slovenian EU Council Presidency

Minister of Foreign Affairs Anže Logar is hosting Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Augusto Santos Silva on an official visit. For the first time in fourteen years, Portugal’s foreign minister is paying a visit to Slovenia. “The recent visit to Slovenia by President de Sousa confirmed the excellent bilateral and friendly relations between the two countries and their intensive cooperation in the Trio Presidency”, emphasised Minister Logar. The visit by Minister Santos Silva provides an opportunity to review the Portuguese Presidency’s achievements and to take up the presidency baton.

In their talks, the two ministers focused on the presidency take-over and exchanged views on the priority tasks and the challenges awaiting the Slovenian Presidency. Minister Logar commended Foreign Minister Santos Silva and Portugal for having successfully completed the EU Council presidency for the fourth time, highlighting both the programme and logistics, a task that was even more challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the presidency, Slovenia will continue working together with the Trio and carry on with the work achieved so far by the Portuguese Presidency in a unifying and constructive spirit. Slovenia will strive to attain European goals to be as coordinated as possible to the benefit of the Union. Minister Santos Silva assured Slovenia of Portugal’s full support and assistance in implementing the ambitious presidency agenda. He commended Slovenia for its excellent selection of priorities and slogan, which partly represents the continuation of the Portuguese Presidency’s work. He particularly commended the presidency for having incorporated the EU’s resilience and the priority tasks into the slogan: “Together. Resilient. Europe.”

The counterparts were in full agreement that the two countries, having the opportunity to cooperate for the second time in the Trio, have only strengthened the already excellent bilateral ties and upgraded their friendly cooperation at all levels.

Tomorrow, Minister Santos Silva will be attending the celebration marking the 30th anniversary of Slovenian statehood.
