State Secretary Raščan addressed a virtual conference on security challenges in the Balkan region, emphasising the importance of Western Balkans’ EU and NATO accession to bolster stability and improve the reform process in the countries of the region.

As to the situation in the region related to the COVID-19 pandemic, he emphasised the importance of the European Commission's Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans, which covers 9 billion euros from the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance. Prior to that, the European Union had already allocated 3.3 billion euros to the Western Balkan countries.

During its EU Council Presidency, Slovenia will strive to continue the process of EU enlargement to the Western Balkans and the sectoral integration of the region with the Union in various areas to ensure its sustainable development.
