  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Slovenia has been elected as a member of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for the 2022–2025 period on 20 April 2021 in New York.

This is Slovenia’s first membership of the Commission, which was approved by 48 out of 54 United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) members at the United Nations Economic and Social Council elections. The election also reflects the recognition of the country’s past work in the fight against drugs. At the same time, it is expected that Slovenia will act productively and actively as the Commission’s member while reaffirming its commitment to the international legal framework on drugs set out in three UN conventions. Slovenia will promote prevention and the need for respect of human rights in addressing drug situation around the world.

The UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs shapes the global drug policy by taking measures and making decisions on the extent of drug control, which is one of its most important activities. Through its membership, Slovenia will be able to help search for comprehensive solutions to all key drug-related dilemmas in the context of global policy, including current debates on cannabis.
