Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Anže Logar met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at Ljubljana Airport and they held a brief bilateral meeting.

Minister Logar expressed satisfaction at being able to host Secretary of State Pompeo; it has been 12 year since the last visit of a high US official, and Secretary Pompeo is only the second head of American diplomacy to pay Slovenia a bilateral visit.

The counterparts agreed that the relations between Slovenia and the US, partners and allies, are of strategic importance, and were of one mind that the ties could be further strengthened in all areas of common interest. Both voiced their belief that today’s visit would contribute to identifying new opportunities for cooperation in political dialogue, cyber security, the economy, science and technology.

They also discussed the current international situation, with Minister Logar stressing that the trans-Atlantic community must remain united and more closely connected than ever before to be able to effectively tackle the numerous challenges ahead. Only standing firmly together can it consistently uphold the values and principles of democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

Minister Logar and Secretary Pompeo underlined the importance of the two states’ alliance within NATO, considered by both to be the most solid foundation of European-US relations, and touched upon strengthened cooperation in regional structures, such as the Three Seas Initiative.
