GOVSI Podcast: Long-term care must be there when people need it

In the latest episode of the GOVSI Podcast, Minister of Demography, Family and Social Affairs Mateja Ribič discusses changes to long-term care, workforce challenges and care at home. She emphasises that the goal is a system that works in practice, enabling people to receive the care they need when they need it.

The Minister explains that the time between submitting an application and receiving care is too long. Recently adopted temporary measures therefore ease the workload at entry points, allow more professionals to provide care and address differences in what residents pay for comparable services in care homes. Residents who have paid too much will receive a credit. The measures also include a monthly allowance for care workers.

Care at home is another focus of the conversation. The Minister wants people to be able to remain in familiar surroundings for as long as they wish, provided it is safe for them to do so. She also highlights cooperation with local communities and the development of smaller residential care units.

The temporary measures will remain in place until the end of 2027, while the Ministry is already preparing longer-term changes. “Behind all these figures, there is always a person,” the Minister stresses.

This episode was hosted by Martin Nahtigal.
