A brief overview of Slovenian history on GOV.SI

Did you know that the territory of present-day Slovenia lay along important Roman trade routes? That Slavic-speaking peoples settled here in the sixth and seventh centuries? That after World War I, Slovenians did not live within a single state? How did Slovenia’s path to independence unfold?

A new section entitled History of Slovenia has been published on the GOV.SI website in Slovenian and English, offering a chronological overview of the development of the Slovenian territory from prehistory to the establishment of an independent state.

The overview highlights key historical turning points and provides broader context for the development of the Slovenian territory. It outlines the processes that have shaped Slovenia over the centuries – from shifting borders and the influence of different state systems to modernisation, social development and the formation of national identity.

Readers are invited to explore important events from the history of the Slovenian people and Slovenia, or simply refresh their knowledge.

The text was prepared by Dr Kornelija Ajlec, a historian specialising in modern and contemporary history at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.
