Vojko Volk: Expulsion of diplomat linked to increase in Russian propaganda activities

State Secretary for National Security Vojko Volk commented in Brussels on the expulsion of a Russian diplomat. As he explained, the expulsion was linked to a significant increase in Russian propaganda activities directed against Slovenia's national interests.

"This involved activities across all areas of social life and influence operations on social media. It included criticism of Slovenia's foreign policy and the justification of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The measure was not adopted overnight; it was carefully considered and necessary," Volk concluded.

The Government is aware of attempts at foreign information manipulation and interference in Slovenian democratic processes and public opinion. For this reason, it has established a working group on countering disinformation within the Secretariat of the National Security Council. EU authorities have likewise warned about interference by foreign states through disinformation and have called on all EU Member States to remain vigilant about disinformation that may spread ahead of the European elections.
