Prime Minister Robert Golob: Sustainability gives rail transport a new future

Prime Minister Robert Golob today attended the signing of a contract for 20 new passenger trains and the opening of the renovated Grosuplje railway station.

He stressed that today was an important day both because of the contract for the new trains and the ceremonial opening of the renovated railway station in Grosuplje. "This was our way of showing that we are investing at both ends – investing in infrastructure and significantly increasing our funding. Last year we invested 300 million euro, and this year we will invest 470 million euro."

He also stressed the importance of rail freight transport for relieving road congestion. "The state has a role to play in infrastructure. Slovenian Railways, as the main operator, also has a role to play in an innovative and business-oriented way," said Prime Minister Golob, adding that the train is not only the means of transport of the last 100 years, but also the means of transport of the future:  "Sustainability is what gives rail transport a new future.  In view of impending climate changes, we need to increase the importance of railways. I want the railway management to fully recognise this, to seize the opportunity, to start behaving sustainably and to look for business opportunities," the Prime Minister concluded.
