Boštjan Poklukar assumes office as the Minister

The newly appointed Minister of the Interior Boštjan Poklukar has taken the office from the Minister of Public Administration and Acting Minister of the Interior Sanja Ajanović Hovnik.

In his press statement, the new Minister Boštjan Poklukar thanked Minister Ajanović Hovnik for her work in the previous months. "My political commitments include countering corruption, migration management and depoliticisation, professionalization and modernisation of the police. We have large legislative proposals ahead of us – amendments to the Organisation and Work of the Police Act and to the Police Tasks and Powers Act as well as two resolutions on the modernisation of the police and on crime prevention."

The Minister announced changes to the migration legislation – The Foreigners Act and the International Protection Act, where he is counting on cooperation with non-governmental organisations. "We should sit down together and draft the Government migration strategy. I am inviting them to present their proposals." He said that his door is also always open to police unions: "I believe that the career system is something we can achieve now. The police need a transparent and just career system."

Minister of Public Administration Sanja Ajanović Hovnik said that she is leaving the Ministry of the Interior in good condition. "I would like to take this opportunity to publically thank all the colleagues and co-workers for making sure that the past two months in my role as a temporary Minister of the Interior went by peacefully and for performing the tasks we set to do according to plan." She wished Minister Poklukar a successful term in office adding that she is looking forward to their fruitful collaboration.

Poklukar previously served as the Minister of the Interior from September 2018 to March 2020.
