World Water Day: Groundwater - making invisible visible

The central theme of this year’s World Water Day is groundwater – making invisible visible. The focus is on the importance of groundwater as it supports the supply of drinking water as well as sanitary systems, agriculture, industry and ecosystems.

Half of abstracted water supplied to households

In 2020, 97.6% or 165 million m3 of water for public water supply was abstracted from groundwater sources, of which 52 million m3 from springs. From public water supply on average 40.2 m3 of water per person per year was supplied or 110 litres per person per day.
