EU funding for a themed route in Novo mesto

  • Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy
Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy has approved EU funding for the project Themed route: Marof archaeological site and Kette avenue. The EUR 490,000 project is implemented by Urban Municipality Novo mesto as part of the Sustainable Urban Strategy Novo mesto 2030 and will receive support from the European Regional Development Fund in the amount of EUR 296,000.

Urban Municipality Novo mesto restored a tree-lined avenue named after the famous Slovenian poet Kette. As part of the project, old or damaged trees were removed and new trees planted, the edges of the carriageway of the former main access road leading to the city were replaced and street lighting installed. In addition, old benches along the avenue were replaced with modern street furniture and information boards were set up. A 640-metre long circular gravel path has been built across the Marof hill, the site of a fortified prehistoric settlement. The area is conceived as a park with archaeological features.

The project supports municipal efforts to restore the degraded urban area in the historic centre of Novo mesto, to revitalise the area while optimising the use of urban public space.
