Preparations of the Trio for the December JHA Council

Ahead of the December Home Affairs Ministers Council, today the Ministers of Trio Presidency, German minister Horst Seehofer, Portuguese minister Eduardo Cabrito and their Slovenian counterpart, minister Aleš Hojs, exchanged views on the new Migration and Asylum Pact.

The ministers expressed their views on further negotitations with regard to proposals within the Pact. Minister Hojs expressed some doubts about the concept of mandatory solidarity and expressed our constructive approach towards finding common solutions. Portuguese minister Cabrito presented the timetable of the negotiations that are expected to take place within the Council during the Portuguese presidency.

Going forward, the German Presidency plans to continue discussions with the Member States on a bilateral basis, in particular regarding the concept of solidarity as one of the pillars of the proposed new migration policy. As a part of the Trio, Slovenia will also participate in these upcoming discussions.

Ministers agreed on the progress made so far in terms of the key elements of the Pact, and it is forseen that the December Home Affairs Council will take stock of the progess report.
