The Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection (hereinafter: AFSVSPP) performs administrative and expert tasks and official controls covering the following areas: the quality, safety and labelling of agricultural products and foodstuffs, including genetically modified foods and excluding administrative tasks of protection of agricultural products and foodstuffs (quality schemes), the quality and voluntary labelling of agricultural products and foodstuffs relating to the drafting of regulations, other acts and materials, the keeping of registers and records, and reporting.

The AFSVSPP performs administrative and expert tasks and carries out official controls relating to the safety, quality and labelling of natural mineral waters, feed, including genetically modified feed; materials and products intended to come into contact with foodstuffs in the stages of production, processing and distribution thereof, including the retail stage; water intended for animal consumption; and tasks relating to animal by-products and derived products that are not intended for human consumption, except for those tasks that lie within the remit of the Slovenian Environment Agency and the Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia for Agriculture, Forestry, Hunting and Fisheries.

The AFSVSPP has also been entrusted with administrative and expert tasks and official controls relating to the identification and registration of animals, animal health, the protection of the population against zoonoses, animal protection, the use and associated traceability of veterinary medicinal products, preventive measures in animal reproduction, plant protection, and seed material of crops, except for public service tasks relating to seed production.

The AFSVSPP is tasked with the evaluation of active substances and the evaluation and authorisation of plant protection products. Its administrative and expert tasks and official controls also cover trade in plant protection products and their use, the testing of plant protection product-application equipment, risk assessment analyses, and inspections for the protection of new varieties of agricultural plants. Inspections within the AFSVSPP are carried out by the Inspection for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection in accordance with the powers assigned to food inspectors, official vets and phytosanitary inspectors under sector-specific laws.
