Uroš Brežan, born 12 April 1972, is a university graduate in economics. After graduating from the School of Economics and Business in Ljubljana, he began working at M Servis d.o.o. where he managed branches and the general affairs division. He left the company to manage a Local Entrepreneurial Centre and the projects of the Soča Valley Development Centre.

He started his political career locally at 31 years of age, when he became Vice-Mayor of the Municipality of Tolmin. In 2006, voters in the local elections first entrusted him to serve as a Mayor and he has retained this position to date. In the 2012–2017 term, he was elected to the National Council as a representative of local interests. Since 2013, he has been serving as Vice-Chair of the Regional Development Council of the Western Slovenia Cohesion Region. As a member of the Slovenian delegation and of the political group The Greens in the European Committee of the Regions, he was appointed rapporteur on the EU action plan for organic farming. As a mayor, he has been involved in the programmes of the Association of Municipalities of Slovenia and the Association of Municipalities and Towns of Slovenia for many years.

He has been active in the Alpine Town of the Year Association, which operates according to the principles of the Alpine Convention, ever since the Municipality of Tolmin was awarded the title of Alpine Town of the Year (2016), and currently serves as the association’s Co-Chair. Part of the integration of the Municipality of Tolmin in the Alpine territory is its cooperation with the Municipality of Villach, and during Brežan's term of office as a Mayor, these two municipalities formally twinned. In 2017, the municipality was awarded the certificate of Youth-Friendly Municipality and in 2020 the Municipality of Health award, which is awarded by the National Institute of Public Health. In 2012, the Municipality of Tolmin was awarded the title of the most energy efficient municipality in the category of medium-sized municipalities. The Memorial Church in Javorca bears the prestigious European Heritage label since 2017. In 2019, the Municipality of Tolmin was included in the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism within the Soča Valley tourist destination, and in 2020 received the gold Slovenia Green Destination label.

Uroš Brežan took up the office of the Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning in June 2022, and has headed the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning since January 2023.
