Rudi Medved, State Secretary responsible for coordinating the operation of the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, and the Military Heritage Administration of the Republic of Slovenia, and for cooperation with representative trade unions in the field of defence and professional firefighters

Rudi Medved, born on 28 December 1959, holds a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism Studies. During his studies at the Faculty of Sociology, Political Sciences and Journalism, now the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana, he was already working as a journalist for Radio Slovenia. After graduating, he edited and hosted leading daily news programmes on Radio Slovenia. From 1992 to 1996, he was Editor of the editorial board for daily news programmes on Radio Slovenia, and up to 2000 he was Editor of the domestic policy editorial board on Radio Slovenia. In 2000-2004 he was Editor of domestic policy and economic programmes on TV Slovenia, in 2006-2007 Editor-in-Chief of Radio Kum Trbovlje, and for the following two years, Editor of 24UR (“24 Hours”), the main news programme on POP TV.

As Director of the Delavski dom Zagorje ob Savi Cultural Centre, Rudi Medved received the highest municipal cultural award – the Slavko Grum Plaque – in 2020 for his successful renewal of the programme offer in 2004-2012, and his contribution to the cultural growth of the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi. He co-founded the Slovenian Association of Cultural Centres. In 2012-2018 he served as Director of the municipal administration of the municipality of Zagorje ob Savi.

In 2018, Rudi Medved was elected Member of Parliament of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, and, after the formation of the coalition, Minister of Public Administration. As Minister, in 2018-2021 he successfully led negotiations with public sector trade unions and established baselines for a reform of the unified salary system with an expert group. Together with a working group, he prepared propositions for electoral system corrections. He reached an understanding on the amount of lump sums and signed an agreement with representative associations. The new Legal Protection in Public Procurement Procedures Act was adopted during his mandate. As a Government Minister, he was also President of the Government Commission for Administrative Affairs and Appointments.

After returning to his parliamentary post in the National Assembly in 2021, he was Vice-President of the Commission for Supervision of the Security and Intelligence Services, and a member of committees on justice, domestic policy and local self-government, and on infrastructure and environment. He was also a substitute member of the committee on defence. He headed the newly-established committee for the investigation of political pressures on the work of the police.

He was appointed State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence on 1 June 2022.
