Damjan Stanonik was born on 29 September 1975 in Ljubljana into a farming family. He is married and lives with his family in Vodice. 

He holds a university degree in political science.  He has extensive knowledge of local self-government, state institutions, and EU institutions, with valuable international, organisational, and management experience.

He started his career as department head at Vodice municipal administration and then served as the general manager of the Komunala Vodice d.o.o. public utility company. He continued his career at the Ministry of Health and in the Minister’s Office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  Most recently, he has worked as an accredited parliamentary assistant in the office of a Member of the European Parliament.

On September 9 2019, he was appointed State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Food.
