With regard to the implementation of the European cohesion policy, the Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy assumes the role of the managing authority for the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Cohesion Fund (CF), which were established to achieve the objective of investment for growth and jobs. Slovenia defines its commitments towards achieving this objective in its Operational Programme for the Implementation of the EU Cohesion Policy in the Period 2014–2020.

In Slovenia, the minister responsible for strategic projects, development and cohesion is also responsible for the application of European and infrastructural funds, while the activities of the managing authority are directed by the Deputy Director, who is directly answerable to the Minister. The Managing Authority Office, under the direct authority of the Deputy Director, performs the task of general management for achieving the goals of the European cohesion policy in accordance with the applicable EU legislation. It oversees the management and monitoring systems and reports regularly to the European Commission and other stakeholders. It is responsible for financial administration, the coordination and monitoring of national and foreign audits of the management system, and individual projects and programmes. It also prepares amendments to the programming documents concerning the management of European cohesion policy funds and materials for the meetings of the committee monitoring the implementation of the Operational Programme for the Implementation of the EU Cohesion Policy in the Period 2014–2020.
