Tomaž Pečjak was born in 1970, in Ljubljana. After finishing the Secondary School for Police Officers in 1988, he served the police force as an apprentice at Rudnik Police Section of Ljubljana Vič Rudnik Police Station until 1989. He studied mathematics and physics at the Faculty of Education and at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology in Ljubljana. He finished his studies in 1993, acquiring a BA in mathematics and physics.
He worked as an engineer in the Operations and Communications Centre of the Ministry of the Interior. He became Senior Adviser in 1994 and took up the position of Assistant Director of the Operations and Communications Centre of the Ministry of the Interior in 1995.
He was appointed Head of the Operations and Communications Centre of the General Police Directorate in 2002.
Between 2001 and 2010, he was engaged as a lecturer of information science and telecommunications at the Police College in Police Academy.
He served as Head of the Service of Director General of the Police for nine years, beginning in 2010.
He was appointed Deputy Director General of the Police on 11 February 2019.
