Brigadier General Milko Petek was born on 27 September 1961 in Ptuj, Slovenia. After completing primary school and military high school in Ljubljana, he continued his education at the military academy in Belgrade. He graduated in 1984 and became a signal officer.
After graduation, he began his professional career as a platoon commander in a Signal Company of an Infantry Brigade. After one year, he became a platoon commander and head of the signal unit in a Motorised Regiment HQ. Later during his career, he worked in the field of electronic warfare as a company commander in a battalion and as head of the signal unit in the Electronic Warfare Regiment HQ. He also completed Officer Candidate School for Electronic Warfare.
Early in 1991, before the Slovenian War for Independence, he left the Yugoslav People’s Army and joined the Slovenian Territorial Defence. Later, he performed several duties in the Territorial Defence Republic Headquarters and General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) as cryptosecurity and electronic-warfare-countermeasures officer, signal assistant, deputy chief and chief of the Signal and IT Branch and, since 1998, as chief of the Communication and Information Systems Section – G6.
Further down his career in the General Staff of the SAF, he worked as Advisor to the Chief of the General Staff (2002-2003), Deputy Chief of the Joint Logistics Division (2003-2004), Chief of the Joint Logistics Division (2004-2007) and Assistant to the Chief of the General Staff (2007).
Between July 2007 and July 2010, he was a head of section (J4, Logistics) in the Staff of the Allied Joint Force Command, Naples; between August and December 2010, he was Deputy Commander of the SAF Doctrine, Development and Education Command, and between February 2011 and June 2014, he was Defence Representative of the Republic of Slovenia at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Slovenia to the UN in New York.
After his return to Slovenia, he performed the duties of Deputy Chief of Staff – Support between July and October 2014. Between November 2014 and January 2017, he was Assistant to Chief of the General Staff and Chief of the Joint Support Division and, between February and May 2017, Chief of Staff of the SAF General Staff. On 12 May 2017, he was appointed Force Commander of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
In 2006, he completed the General Staff Course and was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.
His military decorations include Silver Medal of General Maister, Gold Medal of the Slovenian Armed Forces, Order of General Maister Class 3, and U.S. Presidential Medal for Merit.
He is married to Jasna who is a foreign language teacher, and has two sons, Aljoša (25) and Aleksander (16).
