Matej Marn was born on 18 March 1977. He graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, in 2001.
His career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia started in 2001 at the Department for Neighbouring States. Between September 2002 and December 2004, he was Head of the Office of the State Secretary, and from December 2004 to July 2005, he headed the Minister’s Office. In July 2005, he became Head of the European Union Department and Deputy Political Director. In December 2008, he was appointed Political Director, Head of Common Foreign and Security Policy Department.
In October 2012, he was seconded to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Slovenia to the United Nations in New York and served as Charge d'affaires a.i. until August 2013. He continued to serve at the Mission until September 2016 as Deputy Permanent Representative.
In October 2016, he was appointed Political Director / Director-General for Common Foreign and Security Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia.
He speaks English, German and Spanish. He is married and has a son.
