Ms Barbara Sušnik was born in Ljubljana on 11 June 1968. She graduated in Political Science, International Relations, from the Faculty for Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. She started her career working at the Committee on Foreign Policy of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, later became Secretary to the Commission for Relations with Slovenes in Neighbouring and Other Countries, and in 2001 she joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia. Her first posting abroad was to Canada, where she was First Secretary at the Slovenian Embassy in Ottawa.
During the Slovenian presidency of the European Council in 2008, she was Head of the USA and Canada Section at the Department for North and Latin America and the Caribbean at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Between 2010 and 2015, she was Deputy Permanent Representative of the Slovenian Permanent Representation to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France.
On November 9, 2015, she presented her credentials as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Slovenia to the State of Israel to the President Reuven Rivlin, and she served as Slovenian Ambassador to Israel until July 2019.
As of August 1, 2019, she is Acting Director-General for EU Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia.
Throughout her career, Ms Barbara Sušnik has been involved in activities related to the rights of national and ethnic minorities, human rights and fundamental freedoms, empowerment of women and prevention of violence against women. She is fluent in Slovenian, English, French, Serbian and Croatian.
