The Department for Emerging Challenges and Threats addresses the current challenges faced by the international community arising from globalisation, which requires the development of new forms of international cooperation and strengthening international governance mechanisms.

The Department is responsible for the preparation and inter-ministerial coordination of positions on different types of threats and challenges, such as terrorism, climate change, cybersecurity and energy security, migration, the fight against human trafficking and trade in narcotics, global health, the global approach to water, biodiversity, etc.

It monitors international policies on these issues and, in cooperation with other competent ministries and departments, prepares proposals and positions with regard to Slovenia's responses in considering these issues both bilaterally and within international forums (the United Nations, the EU, NATO, the Council of Europe, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe).
